Yet this well-known echinoderm is becoming increasingly difficult to spot. In the process of deserting our seabed, it is even more complicated to catch. So whose fault is it? The amateur fishermen who feast on its coral? Or the professional fishermen who fill the shelves of markets and restaurants? Or the remorseless poachers? The answer may be simple, but the reality is a little more complex. To better understand what's at stake with this stinging symbol of the Mediterranean, we need to take the time to get to know it. In the face of various assaults, the decline in sea urchin populations also raises the question of the ecological and economic consequences for marine habitats and coastal communities.
