However, it is essential to understand these dynamics, as they determine many marine phenomena, particularly biogeochemical ones. This is the background to the AMIDEX HOPE-VV project (P. I. Anne A. Petrenko), which is studying the influence of vertical velocities on carbon export flows in the subtropical South Pacific, off Noumea. The dynamics of vertical velocities (noted w) are still poorly understood, in particular due to their low amplitude compared with horizontal and vertical velocities, which makes them difficult to measure and often leads to them being neglected. As part of the project, several sensors were deployed to measure w at high frequency, with a time resolution of two hours. The aim of this work is initially to characterise the multi-scale dynamics of vertical velocities using statistical tools for analysing time series.
