Much of this activity occurs on sinking particles, where microscale processes govern how bacteria encounter, colonize, and access organic matter.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yet how these physical and biochemical processes regulate POC degradation remains poorly constrained. In this talk, I will present recent work combining microfluidics, microscopy, and mathematical modelling to uncover how physical forcing and microbial traits control particle degradation.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First, I will show how shear influences bacterial colonization of model marine particles. Using a controlled shear-flow microfluidic platform, we find that increasing shear enhances bacterial colonization and accelerates particle degradation.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A population-dynamics model further shows that the effect of enhanced degradation depends on bacterial lifestyle, with increased attachment strongly accelerating degradation by transient degraders.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I will then show how bacterial extracellular enzymatic strategies determine particle degradation rates. Combining microfluidics, Raman microspectroscopy, and reaction\u2013diffusion modelling, we find that diffusible enzymes drive more extensive degradation throughout the particle interior than predominantly cell-associated enzymes.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Laminar sinking flow (i.e. the flow produced by a particle while sinking) further modifies solute transport and enhances particle degradation for both enzymatic strategies.
