Some of these cyanobacteria have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2), and are known as diazotrophic cyanobacteria. These organisms are also known to contain, in varying proportions, high added-value metabolites and nutrients, giving them potential economic value for New Caledonia. Several of these cyanobacteria have been isolated from the coastal waters of New Caledonia and the offshore waters of the South West Pacific, but the capacities of these organisms are still unknown.
