The book examines the sustainability of Marseilles, seen as an example of a major Mediterranean coastal metropolis. It brings together the views of a range of scientific disciplines as well as professionals from a variety of fields (land management, natural spaces, urban planning, heritage, health, etc.). Developed as part of the LabEx OT-Med, it sets out the current state of knowledge and raises a number of questions with reference to the sustainable development paradigm, despite the criticisms that have been levelled at it. This concept has the advantage of clearly delimiting three dimensions - social, environmental and economic - and of postulating that the analysis of their interactions is essential to account for uncertain situations conditioned by major changes such as climate change. Studying a large city chosen as a 'laboratory' can take advantage of a fertile space in terms of cultural, social, spatial, temporal, institutional and biological diversity from which new ideas can emerge to be tested and evaluated.
