After a first conference in 2019 dedicated to neurotechnologies, Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9 invites you to attend its second European conference on 16 June, devoted to the social challenge of \"Protecting our oceans: the challenge of European leadership in the world\".<\/p>

The conference, under the patronage of Maria da Gra\u00e7a Carvalho MEP, European Parliament rapporteur for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), former rapporteur for the Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation and former Portuguese minister for science, will focus on the interactions between marine sciences, public policy and society. Scientific coordination will be the responsibility of Richard Semp\u00e9r\u00e9, Director of the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology (MIO) at Aix-Marseille University and of AMU's new Institut d'\u00e9tablissement des Sciences de l'Oc\u00e9an.\u00a0<\/p>

In dialogue with senior representatives of the European Commission and UNESCO, as well as NGOs, European scientists will contribute to the challenges that Europe intends to take up, particularly from two angles: the fight against the disruption of marine ecosystems caused by climate change and the challenge of the dispersion of marine contaminants. These are two areas in which the excellence of oceanographic research at Aix-Marseille is making a contribution of global significance.\u00a0<\/p>

The event, which follows on from World Oceans Day 2021, will be an official contribution to the United Nations 2021-2030 Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development.\u00a0<\/p>

At European level, the Conference intends to contribute to the European Green Pact and to the future \"Star of the Sea\" Mission initiated by the Horizon Europe framework programme for research and innovation, which will be the subject of a Communication from the European Commission in the coming weeks.<\/p>

On this occasion, AMU intends to promote young scientists whose research is proving particularly promising. By enabling exchanges with other universities and European players, this event is intended to accelerate collaboration at a time when this has been made more difficult by the health crisis. Nevertheless, it remains a priority for the United Nations and the European Union in the face of environmental challenges and the decisive role of ocean sciences in observing, understanding and acting on global changes, including climate change, a cause to which Aix-Marseille Universit\u00e9 is permanently committed.\u00a0<\/p>
