Pourtant, les faibles niveaux de Hg dans l&#8217;eau de mer se bioamplifient des millions de fois le long de la cha\u00eene alimentaire marine, pour atteindre des niveaux nocifs chez les poissons pr\u00e9dateurs et leurs consommateurs humains. Les sources naturelles et anthropiques de Hg dans l&#8217;oc\u00e9an restent mal contr\u00f4l\u00e9es. Il a fallu 10 ans de d\u00e9veloppement pour trouver une m\u00e9thode permettant de mesurer les isotopes stables du Hg dans l&#8217;eau de mer \u00e0 des niveaux subpicomolaires. Les signatures isotopiques du Hg dans l&#8217;oc\u00e9an sugg\u00e8rent que l&#8217;absorption de gaz (Hg0) et le d\u00e9p\u00f4t ionique (HgII) sont d&#8217;importance \u00e9gale (1:1), ce qui est contraire \u00e0 notre compr\u00e9hension actuelle (1:3).\u00a0 Le d\u00e9p\u00f4t de HgII est probablement surestim\u00e9 de 2 \u00e0 3 fois, et l&#8217;oc\u00e9an re\u00e7oit globalement moins de Hg.
