Ocean Sciences: Marine Biogeochemistry

Discover new insights about carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical cycles in the open ocean, from the surface to the deep-

Main topics addressed

The main topics that will be addressed during the course are :

Rapid overview on the knowledges and the involved metabolic processes
Insights into the ocean’s biological carbon pump, that regulates Earth carbon cycle by transporting part of the photosynthetically fixed CO2 into the deep ocean
New paradigms about nitrogen fixation that allows to enrich marine ecosystems
The mesopelagic zones and the role of prokaryote in the degradation of the organic matter
Ecology of the mesopelagic zone, example of bioluminescence  and its links with the biological carbon pump

This course is spread over three days for a total duration of 10 hours :

6 October 2021: 10.00 -12.00 CET
8 October 2021: 14.00 - 18.00 am CET
13 October 2021: 8.00-12.00 CET

Requirements

Applicants should be Master's or PhD students at one of the CIVIS member universities.

A basic knowledge of biogeochemistry and microbial ecology is required, as well as a working knowledge of English (at least B2 level).

Application process
