The deadline for submitting letters of intent is:
- at 15 November 2026, for the autumn term
- at 7 March 2027, for the spring term.
We are pleased to announce the launch of the Polar Institute’s annual 2027 call for proposals, which, for all new projects, follows a two-stage process.
The first stage involves assessing the preliminary proposals submitted in the form of letters of intent, and this assessment determines which project teams will then be invited to submit a detailed proposal. Two periods for the submission and evaluation of preliminary proposals have been set, in the autumn and in the spring; the submission of detailed proposals, however, takes place annually (with a deadline for submission in mid-July).
The submission of a letter of intent applies to all new projects (the term ‘new projects’ refers to all projects that have never been funded by the Polar Institute and all projects that have already been submitted and assessed but have not yet been funded) which may be carried out in both hemispheres, in the Arctic, Antarctic and sub-Antarctic polar regions. For the southern hemisphere, projects may commence from the 2028/2029 summer season or the 2029 overwintering season; for the northern hemisphere, projects may commence in January 2028.
For all new projects, We invite you to send us your letter of intent using the attached form.
Important : Submitting a letter of intent enables an initial assessment of the scientific merit and operational feasibility of the projects. However, the Polar Institute does not yet have a complete overview of the vessels’ schedules, the number of vessel rotations, the number of places available at the stations (Concordia, Dumont d’Urville, Amsterdam, Kerguelen, Crozet), nor of the budgets we will have available to support projects in 2028 in the Arctic, and for the 2028/2029 summer campaign and the 2029 overwintering in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. The submission of a letter of intent and the invitation to submit a full proposal do not constitute definitive confirmation of the project’s feasibility; this will only be determined at the latest during the final project selection phase.
