The IRD, which is strongly committed to achieving the sustainable development goals, is taking action to mark the occasion.
The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) will be held from 11 to 15 March 2019 in Nairobi, bringing together 193 countries to propose innovative solutions to the environmental challenges facing our planet.
To open this session and to encourage mobilisation in favour of adaptation to climate change, the protection of biodiversity and the energy transition in Africa, the third edition of the One Planet Summit (OPS) will also take place on 14 March 2019 in Nairobi. Initiated by France, in partnership with the World Bank and the United Nations Secretariat, the OPS aims to strengthen international commitment to the 2030 Agenda, and in particular to combat climate scepticism. Jean-Paul Moatti, CEO of the IRD, will accompany French President Emmanuel Macron.

Opening of the One Planet Summit by Arona Diedhiou, IRD research director and IPCC expert
14 March at 9 a.m.
Arona Diedhiou is a climatologist and atmospheric physicist at UMR IGE. His work focuses on climate variability and change and rainfall, from the large to the mesoscale. As an expert member of the IPCC, he was involved in drawing up the report on the implications of a 1.5°C rise in temperature.
The signing of a framework agreement between the IRD, CIRAD and UNEP
14 March
This agreement will provide a framework for scientific cooperation on the major challenges facing the global environment and sustainable development. This multidisciplinary agreement will focus on the acquisition and sharing of data and observations on environmental dynamics, in particular the oceans, land degradation, pollution, the impact of climate change, the impact of mining activities and natural disasters.
A lunch pitch on mangroves
14 March at 12 noon
Stéphanie Duvail (IRD UMR PALOC) and her partners Wanja Dorothy Nyingi (National Museums of Kenya) and James Gitundu Kairo (Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute) will be presenting their work on the preservation and management of African coastal mangroves.
