International workshop on ecosystem-based management

 Dear colleagues,

The 'species by species' or 'stock by stock' approach applied to fisheries characterised the twentieth century. The ecosystem approach, which in the case of fisheries was born at the end of the twentieth century, represents the new challenge, a revolution in ecology in the twenty-first century.

The GIS Posidonie is pleased to announce that an international working group on ecosystem-based management will be held in Marseille - France, on 4 and 5 February 2020, in the Oceanomed building of the Institut Méditerranéen d'Océanologie (MIO) and the Institut Pythéas on the Luminy Campus, University of Aix- Marseille.

The Ecosystem Approach (EA), in line with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, is designed to understand and demonstrate the functioning of marine and coastal ecosystems and the services they provide. As an integrated management process, this strategy promotes both conservation and the sustainability of the uses and benefits that society derives from the environment, in a more equitable manner. The ecosystem approach was first used in fisheries management, but it has now become a relevant tool for defining ecosystem services and for monitoring and governing marine protected areas, particularly in the Mediterranean. The fact that humans are part of ecosystems (socio-ecosystems) is a major element in the ecosystem approach.

The aim of organising the workshop on ecosystem-based management in Marseille is to bring together managers, decision-makers and scientists to discuss this crucial subject as part of the integrated LIFE MarHa project, led by the Agence Française de la Biodiversité and funded by the European Commission.

This working group will last 2 days and will include plenary sessions starting with a contribution from a personality involved in the subject and ending with general discussions. The sessions have not yet been precisely defined and will depend on the number and themes of the contributions submitted by the authors. The ecosystem-based approach applied to fisheries management, the evaluation of ecosystem services, the monitoring of environments using the ecosystem approach, the ecosystem approach to the management and conservation of marine protected areas, the ecosystem approach to terrestrial ecosystems and the study of socio-ecosystems are among the main themes that will be addressed. This international workshop will focus on marine and coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean, but will also welcome contributions on other European ecosystems.

The workshop registration fee is €100 per person (€50 for students and GIS Posidonie members) and includes dinner, lunches and coffee breaks.

The workshop languages are English and French.
