A technology network to keep a close eye on...

Our colleagues from the MIO, Denis Bourras, Nagib Bhairy and Jean-Luc Fuda took part in the first edition of the "Drones and on-board sensors" days, which were held from 28 to 30 September 2021 at the CNRS centre at la vieille Perrotine on the Oléron peninsula. On the menu was a broad overview of drones used in science, on land, at sea, in the air and in space, with numerous technical and scientific presentations, as well as outdoor demonstrations of the machines. Denis Bourras and Jean-Luc Fuda presented two technological developments from the OPLC team: the TIMBALES surface drone, designed to measure surface temperature at high resolution and very high accuracy in sub-mesoscale structures, and the VVP (Vertical Velocity Profiler) profiler, designed to measure the vertical component of ocean currents associated with these same structures. The latter development benefited from the technical and logistical support of the SAM from the outset, as well as from the invaluable expertise of our research and IT colleagues at the IRPHE and the OSU Pytheas (P. Le Gal, H. Branger, C. Luneau), who organised, supervised and interpreted the wind tunnel tests on the profiler.
