The ocean is not only the cradle of life, it holds the keys to a fair and sustainable future.
2024 will mark the fourth year of implementation of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Under the leadership of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the Decade of the Ocean has already galvanised thousands of partners around the world to start delivering the science we need for the ocean we want.
The time has come to address the key questions related to the Decade of the Ocean: What have been the main achievements since the launch of the Decade of the Ocean? What should be the main areas of action for the next three to five years?
Focusing on the theme "Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want", the Ocean Decade 2024 conference, to be hosted by the Spanish government in Barcelona from 10 to 12 April 2024, will bring together the global Ocean Decade community and its partners to celebrate and take stock of progress, and to set common priorities for the future.
An important milestone on the road to 2030, the event will cover all the challenges of the Decade of the Oceans, including critical issues such as climate change, food security, sustainable management of biodiversity, sustainable ocean economy, pollution and natural hazards.
Over three days, from 10 to 12 April, the Decade of the Oceans 2024 conference will lay new foundations for strengthening sustainable ocean management and stimulating science-based innovation, from the global to the local level.
