Science bars alongside the UNOC!

Alongside UNOC3 and the One Ocean Congress, the scientific community and associations are mobilising to raise public awareness of the importance of the ocean and the role that everyone can play in preserving it. This event is the result of collaboration between COAL and OSU Pythéas. The MIO is taking part!

Three meetings with ocean scientists, activists and artists, hosted by Natacha Triou, journalist and producer of the programme Science CQFD on France Culture.

PROTECT THE OCEAN! YES, BUT HOW?

Although essential for biodiversity and the preservation of the oceans, marine areas that are actually protected represent only 0.1 % of mainland waters. How and where should these areas, where certain human activities are prohibited, be established? What other measures could be effective? Elected representatives, scientists and ocean protectors will discuss the challenges and solutions for effective protection of marine environments.

Speakers:

  • Aurore Asso, Nice Côte d'Azur municipal and metropolitan councillor in charge of protecting the marine environment,
  • Sandrine Ruitton, Senior Lecturer at Aix-Marseille University's Institut Méditerranéen d'Océanologie - MIO (OSU Pythéas/AMU, CNRS, IRD, Université de Toulon),
  • François Sarano, oceanographer and specialist in marine biology. Former scientific director on Captain Jacques Cousteau's team,
  • Zoé Lavocat, campaign manager for the Bloom Association.
