This programme is jointly funded by POGO and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and aims to promote training and capacity building for a global ocean observation programme. The programme has been a success for over fifteen years, with more than 160 scholarships awarded since 2001.
The fellowship programme is open to scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (preferably at PhD level) and postdoctoral fellows from developing countries and countries in transition who are involved in oceanographic work. Applicants must be citizens of developing countries or economies in transition, as defined by the OECD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC). For more information, see the list of eligible countries. The main objective of the programme is to advance sustained ocean observations and their applications. Priority is given to candidates in the early stages of their career. This fellowship is intended to support training in oceanographic observation, not the learning of research techniques. Its main aim is to advance sustained ocean observations and their applications;
it offers the opportunity to visit other oceanographic centres for a short period (1 to 3 months) for training in all aspects of oceanographic observation, analysis and interpretation.
