"Seasonal and multiannual dynamics of the carbonate system in surface waters in the Mediterranean Sea".

Thesis supervisor: Patrick Raimbault, Research Director

Co-director: Thibaut Wagener , Senior Lecturer

Summary:

The Mediterranean Sea is often regarded as a laboratory ocean for understanding global changes linked to the increase in atmospheric CO2. This study, based on data collected in three Mediterranean regions, examines variations in oceanic CO2 in this basin. On a seasonal scale, in addition to temperature changes, alkalinity content influences CO2 content in the eastern Mediterranean, while changes in total carbon are responsible for variations in the western basin. In urbanised coastal areas, anthropogenic CO2 emissions condition air-sea CO2 exchanges. This study shows that the increase in carbon and acidification over several years is not solely due to the increase in atmospheric CO2: the alkalinity content modulates these trends in the eastern basin, while in the western basin these trends are probably influenced by the dynamics of currents.
