The Interreg Marittimo SPLASH&Co project is being carried out in partnership with the University of Genova (UNIGE)  and the European Research Institute (ERI).

SPLASH&Co aims to understand the impact of COVID on the nature and quantities of micro-plastics (MPs) found at sea. One of the areas of research at the MIO laboratory is the distribution of MPs within the water column. To this end, we will shortly be installing a device for sampling only the surface micro-layer.

The results will enable us to better estimate the dynamics of microplastics in coastal waters, as well as better dimension atmospheric inputs.

In addition, experiments on the colonization of COVID masks, currently underway, will enable us to quantify the impact of biofilms on the fall velocity of these elements.
