As a PhD student at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), I'm doing a thesis on bioluminescence in the mesopelagic environment, exploring its genetic variability and ecological role in the deep ocean.
The first part of my work aims to characterise the bacterial communities associated with mesopelagic fish, with a focus on bioluminescent bacteria. This study is based on samples collected in the North-East Atlantic during the APERO campaign, and in the Southern Ocean as part of the OBS-Austral 2024 campaign.

I'm also interested in the mechanisms that regulate light emission in a model bacterium, Photobacterium kishitannii ANT2200, combining comparative genomics, transcriptomics (RNA-seq) and qPCR approaches.

This thesis is being carried out under the supervision of Laurie Casalot and Marc Garel.
