PhD student in biogeochemistry and microbial ecology on the theme of nutrient transformations mediated by microorganisms in subterranean estuaries. The Subterranean Mixing and Reaction Field (SMRF) of continental freshwater and seawater circulation is of great interest because it is very active for the major element cycle serving as nutrients. However, the role played by microbiological processes in nutrient cycles in the subterranean estuary remains poorly understood. The main objective of this study is to link the circulation dynamics and activity of the microbial community to the physicochemical gradients in the SMRF. Using a model study area, this thesis will clarify both the biogeochemical balance within SMRFs and the impact of groundwater discharges on coastal waters.
