Documentary - Oases in the ocean

The documentary 𝑫𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒍'𝒐𝒄𝒆́𝒂𝒏 will be broadcast on Ushuaïa TV from Saturday 25 October 2025 à 20h50 (Paris time).

Produced by Cut-outs and Ushuaia TV, directed by Olivier Husson, this film highlights the work of our colleague Sophie Bonnet, an oceanographer at the IRD-MIO in Nouméa, as part of the The ERC HOPE Project.

Winner of the 1st prize in the Pariscience Festival 2024, this film follows the researcher on her quest for underwater oases in the heart of the South Pacific. 

As climate change impoverishes tropical oceans and turns them into deserts, Sophie Bonnet explores the role of phytoplankton, microscopic organisms capable of fertilising the ocean and capturing carbon. What if this small, invisible player held part of the key to making the oceans more resilient in the face of climate change?

A not-to-be-missed 52-minute film that takes you to the heart of the oceanographic research carried out by the IRD's teams in New Caledonia and the South Pacific.
