Marine Sciences Masters: a week's immersion on board an oceanographic vessel

From 20 to 26 February 2023, first-year students in the Marine Sciences Masters programme took part in the traditional multidisciplinary mission at sea, on a vessel from the French oceanographic fleet.

Aboard the Téthys II, an oceanographic vessel equipped to meet the needs of researchers in the fields of marine geosciences, physical and biological oceanography, biogeochemistry and ocean chemistry, students in the Sciences de la Mer (SDM) master's degree course at the UFR Sciences et Techniques took samples off the coast of Saint-Tropez.

The samples were then processed in the laboratory at IFREMER's premises in Brégaillon, and the data collected in the work rooms according to their specialities: physics (PHYMER course), chemistry (CHARME) and biology (IPA).

To round off their week of immersion, the students presented their work in an oral presentation to the Masters supervisors who lead this annual adventure.

"These 15 days are a highlight of the course, providing unique professional experience through access to a large oceanographic vessel, but it's also an opportunity to learn to work in a group, exchange ideas across disciplines and prepare summaries of the data collected," points out Yann Ourmières, researcher at the MIO laboratory at the University of Toulon and course leader.
