The MIO adopts a motion in favour of the climate!

The MIO staff, consulted by electronic vote, were 93 % in favour of this motion:

Aware of the climate emergency and the other challenges facing mankind if we are to preserve the viability of our planet Earth, the AMU/CNRS/IRD/UTLN staff of the MIO (Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography) laboratory support the initiatives that are being put in place both at global level and in France to address the global emergency (climate, biodiversity, environment), following the example of a growing number of laboratories in France and abroad.

We therefore undertake to :

- act daily to reduce the climate and environmental impact of our research activities,

- to raise awareness among the public we come into contact with in the course of our professional activities (students, the general public, political decision-makers, supervisory authorities, populations in the South via our IRD sites, etc.) of the alarming state of the situation and the urgent need to take action in order to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ocean acidification, over-fishing, the plasticisation of our planet and our plates, the drastic reduction in biodiversity, etc.

- support global youth climate initiatives on 15 March 2019 and beyond,

- relaying calls to take part, via our info-soc list and other media (laboratory newsletter, website, etc.), in the global march for the climate on 16 March 2019 and relaying and supporting all similar initiatives (Appeal by 300 European researchers in the daily newspaper Le Soir, Scientists warning by the Alliance of World Scientists, tribune by 700 French scientists in Libération, IPCC report, etc.).

and we are asking political leaders of all persuasions, our supervisory bodies and the public authorities to :

- help us to meet these commitments by encouraging and supporting all our eco-responsible initiatives,

- unite their efforts to rapidly implement large-scale actions and concrete measures that are commensurate with the planet's extreme urgency.

From now on, the MIO will be taking concrete action: don't hesitate to send us your suggestions!
