Observation from space of a decline in plankton biomass in a nitrogen-fixation hotspot

News CNRS Earth & Universe

A study by scientists from the CNRS Terre & Univers (Laboratoire d'océanologie et de géosciences (LOG) & Institut Méditerranéen d'Océanologie (MIO- OSU Pythéas)) has revealed a gradual decline in biomass over the last two decades in the nitrogen (N2) fixation hotspot in the south-western tropical Pacific.

This decline is attributed to a gradual reduction in the amplitude of seasonal cycles, linked to a change in stratification.
