In order to encourage researchers to focus their efforts on key scientific objectives and priority tools, the CNRS-INSU, together with its partners, funds, coordinates and implements national-scale programmes covering a wide range of scientific themes, from the Earth system to the Universe:

- Continental Surfaces and Interfaces
- Solid Ground
A number of cross-functional programmes have been set up to encourage innovative approaches:
- National Planetology Programme (PNP)
- National Spatial Remote Sensing Programme (PNTS)
- National Programme for Innovative and Cross-cutting Instrumentation (PN IIT)
- National Programme for the Sciences of the Universe and Digital Technology (PN SUN)
