The artificialisation of the marine environment has altered habitat structure, food webs and colonisation dynamics. Whilst certain infrastructure acts as artificial reefs, encouraging species to settle, it also leads to ecological simplification and biotic homogenisation. Consequently, does the biodiversity observed in artificial marine environments represent a genuine functional benefit for the ecosystem, or a depleted substitute for natural ecosystems?
