LEFE/CHAT workshop "Surface-atmosphere exchanges in the critical zone - particles, greenhouse gases, reactive compounds"

10 June 2024 to 11 June 2024

The CHAT/LEFE Scientific Committee is organizing a Workshop on "Surface-atmosphere exchanges in the critical zone (particles, greenhouse gases, reactive compounds)" in Toulouse on June 10-11, 2024.

The need for multidisciplinarity to address issues of energy and compound exchange at the continental surface/atmosphere interface has been widely emphasized at OA and SIC community foresight symposia. From an atmospheric standpoint, in-depth measurement and modeling of compound emissions and deposition, taking into account soil conditions (water content, surface temperature, land use), is a sine qua non for a proper understanding of atmospheric chemistry. From the point of view of continental surfaces, interfaces are defined as surfaces for the exchange of water, matter and energy between biotic and abiotic compartments. In this workshop, we want to bring together people involved in measuring and modeling exchanges of energy and gaseous and particulate compounds, in relation to soil condition, vegetation, nutrients and water.

The aim is to encourage exchanges between communities working at the continent-atmosphere interface (SIC, OA, INRAE, ...) to improve understanding and consideration of physical and biogeochemical processes in estimates of reactive gas, greenhouse gas and particle exchanges. A first edition of this workshop took place in June 2023, and we'd like to repeat the experience to broaden our thinking. This workshop, which will be largely discussion-based, should enable the two communities to get to know each other's different approaches and common needs, and thus encourage new collaborations and the emergence of new projects.

The workshop will be held in Toulouse (Observatoire Midi Pyrénées) over two half-days (Monday June 10, 2pm - Tuesday June 11, 12pm).After some general and more targeted presentations, time will be devoted to formal and informal discussions. The deadline for registration is May 7, 2024.
