Meeting NOTION au MIO

Last Friday 7th October the NOTION project meeting took place at MIO. Funded by BNP-Paribas Climate & Biodiversity Initiative, NOTION uses a combination of lab experiments, field expeditions and biogeochemical modeling to infer the distribution and activity of diazotrophs in the future ocean under climate change.

While the project keeps on progressing, we were glad to discuss the first results, including an implementation of a Species Distribution Model encompassing all diazotroph phylotypes in current databases and the implementation of unicellular diazotrophs in a ROMS-Biogeochemistry model of the Atlantic Ocean. On the lab side, experiments have been completed and we are now exploring transcriptomic responses to simulated climate change forcing (temperature and acidification) on the physiology of diazotrophs.

Organized by Mar Benavides and Alba Filella, we were glad to welcome Lasse Riemann (Copenhagen University), Maren Voss and Jacqueline Umbricht (Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research), Domitille Louchard and Jana Härri (ETH-Zürich), and Thomas Vannier (CENTURI).
