PLASMA : "Microplastics in Mayotte's lagoon? Students investigate...

To mark World Ocean Day, on Thursday June 8, from 10am to 3pm, researchers and students from Mayotte's 3rd and 2nd year high school classes will get together to present the results of work carried out as part of the PLASMA project: "Microplastic pollution in Mayotte's lagoon". This research was carried out throughout the 2022-2023 school year, and was led by researchers (sociologist and oceanographers from MIO) as well as teacher-researchers from the CUFR de Mayotte. The principle of the project is to combine traditional and participatory sciences, and to involve students in field surveys, whether in environmental sciences (water sampling, analyses....) or social sciences (field surveys, observations, interviews....). In addition to raising awareness of the microplastic issue among schoolchildren and the general public, this participatory science project is a serious contribution to the advancement of knowledge about this environment. The results presented to the general public on June 8 will enrich the data collected since 2017 by the Marine Park's waste observatory, and will serve as a guide for the management measures that need to be taken in this area".
