Feedback from MIO participants in the MOOSE-GE 2022 campaign

Many researchers, engineers and students of the laboratory participated in the MOOSE "Grande Echelle" campaign held on the NO Why not? from September 6 to October 1, 2022: Anthony Bosse (leg 2 mission leader), Thibaut Wagener, François Carlotti, Karine Leblanc, Sandra Nunige, Léa Guyomarc'h, Nicole Garcia, Morgane Didry, Magali Lescot, as well as several students and PhD students: Élisabeth Chevillon, Thibaut Antoine, Florian Haitz, Cristhian Asto and Théo Garcia. Many laboratories participate in this multi-disciplinary campaign as the MIO, but also the Laboratory of Oceanography and Climate (LOCEAN, Paris), the Institut de la Mer de Villefranche, CEFREM (Perpignan) and the Biological Station of Roscoff.

This annual campaign, which has been taking place since 2010, is part of the MOOSE Nation Observation Service dedicated to the long-term monitoring of physical, biogeochemical and biological properties of the northwestern Mediterranean (https://www.moose-network.fr/fr/). This network is more broadly integrated into the Coastal Research Infrastructure (IR-ILICO, https://www.ir-ilico.fr/).

Thus MOOSE-GE allows each year to carry out a network of about one hundred stations for physical parameters (temperature, salinity, currents) and biogeochemical (nutrients, oxygen, carbon, pH, ...) covering the basin of the North-Western Mediterranean, including about twenty biological stations where plankton net samples for the analysis of taxonomic diversity and environmental genomics are conducted. The cruise also supports the development of new protocols, such as this year with the deployment of RESPIRE drifting lines (M. Bressace, IMEV), the isolation of new bioluminescent bacteria (M. Lescot, MIO) or the deployment of new equipment such as the Deepnet and the Planktoscope (K. Leblanc, MIO).

An important objective of the campaign is to train students on board in the form of a floating university. This year on the NO Pourquoi Pas? we were able to take on board 18 students from many French universities (Sorbonne University, University of Toulon, Aix-Marseille University, ...). All of them shared their experience with us with stars in their eyes and, hopefully, a desire to continue in the field of oceanography.

This 2022 edition was a success on all points. See you in July 2023 for the next edition!
