Ocean "Gelition": the relationship between jellyfish and humans. A conference by Delphine Thibault

The last Wednesday of each month at 7pm, citizen meetings around ecology and environment at the Marine Station of Endoume.

On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, follow live the conference of Delphine Thibault, Lecturer, Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology (MIO), Aix-Marseille University on the theme: "Gelition" of the oceans: Relationship between jellyfish and humans.

The VVP, swim it easy...

On June 2 and 3, 2021, it was in the fresh water of the 10m-depth pit at the famous COMEX company that the VVP was tested. Equipped with ice release systems developped at MIO to free it from its ballast after each dive, the VVP performed more than 80 ascending profiles at different velocities and with different configurations, in order to characterise its dynamics in a controlled environment. The measurements will allow us to assess its drag coefficient, as well as the frequency and amplitude of wake vortices as a function of the speed and configuration of the VVP.

News from the MOOSE-GE1 campaign

On board the Ifremer Thalassa, biological observations are in full swing as part of the MOOSE Mediterranean Ocean Observing System for the Environment campaign
Laboratories involved in this biological part of the campaign: AD2M of the Roscoff Biological Station - CNRS / Sorbonne University, the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory, the MIO Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography
The plankton nets bring back an incredible harvest of living organisms studied on board by imaging and genomic technologies to analyze the biodiversity from the surface to 2000 m depth

Calanques of Marseille: an invasive alga from Japan proliferates

An alga is proliferating rapidly in the Callelongue cove in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). Identifiable by its size and its green color, its presence worries.

Video portrait : Mar Benavides and the nourishing microorganisms of the ocean

.

A young researcher with a passion for the infinitely small in the oceans, Mar Benavides was recently awarded the bronze medal of the CNRS. She studies the functioning of diazotrophs, bacteria that provide nitrogen to the entire underwater food chain. Her goal is to analyze the reaction of these microorganisms to climate change in order to better understand future global changes in the ocean.

On the occasion of the High Council for Franco-Tunisian Cooperation, two international joint laboratory agreements (LMI) were signed

Two LMIs in which the MIO is strongly involved:

LMI BIOTEC H2 - Production and storage of biohydrogen and methane by valorization of fermentable agro-food by-products
Signatories: the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Institute of Research for Development.
LMI BIOTEC H2 aims to produce biohydrogen from agro-food waste. This process would represent an energy-generating and fully environmentally friendly technology.
MIO contact: Pierre Pol Liebgott

The MIO has joined the LMI LOTUS (Land Ocean aTmosphere regional coUpled System study center

Report of the Ocean & Climate Platform (POC)

The Ocean & Climate Platform (OCP) has just published, on the occasion of World Ocean Day, a report on the solutions implemented by its members to address climate change and biodiversity loss. This report, which presents the ocean-climate-biodiversity nexus, is designed to highlight the projects carried out by the POC network and to bring them to the attention of policy makers, in order to create new opportunities for action for the ocean in the years to come.
